Easy Indoor Herb Gardening For Beginners

Are herbs easy to grow indoors? How much space do I need to grow herbs indoors? How much sun exposure should I have in my house for herbs to flourish indoors? What are some of the biggest problems with growing herbs indoors? These are some of the more common questions that people need to figure out if they are truly serious about indoor herb gardening. Some of the first things you will want to consider is the environment of your home like the amount of sunlight a room gets and the type of air the room gets.

indoor herb gardenA common place for people to start their indoor herb garden is on the kitchen windowsill. Keep in mind where the source of heat for your home comes from as it just might be from a vent above the window or radiant heater. In most homes during the winter months rooms tend to be on the drier side so you will need to figure how how to get some extra moisture to your new indoor herbs. Two easy fixes for this simple issue is a few shots of mist from a water bottle on a regular basis or you can place your indoor herb pots on a tray of pebbles that you can pour some water into. The evaporating water will add just enough moisture to air surrounding your indoor herb garden to keep it healthy and thriving.

In terms of space like I mentioned earlier you can get a pretty healthy amount of indoor herbs going in a limited amount of space with the most common area for an indoor herb garden is a couple of small pots on a windowsill in your home. If you happen to have your choice of windowsills go for the windowsill that will give your indoor herb garden a good four to eight hours of sunlight during the day. If you notice the leaves in your herb garden fading, falling off or leaves with long leggy stems than the odds are that your windowsill is not getting enough sunlight for your indoor herb garden. One answer to your sunlight problem is artificial grow-lights that you can purchase in store or a simpler and even cheaper solution if you have access to it would be to move your indoor herb garden to a windowsill that gets more sunlight.

One other common problem that indoor herb gardening beginners face are the dreaded pests. Yes pests can get to and destroy your indoor herb garden so if you notice some tiny little critters crawling or flying around your indoor herbs garden there is a simple and cheap solution for this common issue as well. Soapy water, yep a good mix of some regular hand soap and some water in a spray bottle will be enough get rid of your little critter problem and not hurt your herbs in the process. Just be sure to spray your soapy solution under the leaves as well because that is the most likely place that your critter infestation is laying their eggs.

OK now that we have some of the basics out of the way what kind of fresh herbs do you think will get the most use in your kitchen? For example of a few of the more common indoor herbs that people grow are oregano, thyme and sage these bushy perennial herbs  do a little better in terms of growing in an indoor herb garden. I would suggest visiting an herb nursery to better gage your gardening skills and they type of herbs you want to grow indoors.
