Stevia the sweet leaf herb that is changing they way people sweeten their foods and drinks. The stevia plant is gaining wide spread acceptance in the market place and even better is the fact that it is getting recognized as a practical herb that can easily be grown at home if you happen to be an herb gardener at heart.
I had heard about stevia a good ten years ago now back in the day when I used to train at a karate school and the instructor there was a big time health fanatic and was big into growing his own food and herbs to flavor it all. The stevia plant just blew me away the first time I was exposed to it and I had a leaf steep in some green tea. Wow did that make it sweeter then any sugar to sugar substitute I had ever had.
It is an annual herb that can very easily be grown inside your home as long as you have a windowsill that enjoys a good deal of sunlight during the day. Other wise you may have to get an artificial light lamp to keep your stevia plant healthy and happy. Believe me when I tell you that if you can manage to make the switch from regular sugar or cane sugar to the stevia herb that your taste buds and your health will be thanking you. It is a great way to not only reduce the sugar intake of your diet but the amount of calories you are consuming as well.
You can use these powerful little herb sweeteners in a few different ways. The first of which I have already mentioned where you just pick off a leaf or two and throw it into your tea for steeping. The other way which is the most popular is for the leaves to be dried out and then ground up into a powder form a la sugar like consistency. This way of course is the way that is exposing the power of this herb to the rest of the world.
Have you seen the little sweetener packets by the name of Truvia? That is just one example of the many different versions of stevia sweetener that is now available on the market. So if you are not really into growing your own herbal stevia plant at home but still want to see if this stuff really does have the health benefits that so many places seem to be claiming now a days. If you want to learn a few more things about this sweet leaf you should check out this post over at the discovery site called planet green. It’s a great site with a lot of good resources and good information that is updated pretty regularly, enjoy ![]()
